2015 June Martins Bank Building Water Street to become an iconic 5* “Martins Hotel”

Castlewood Property Management, the owners of the iconic Martins Bank Building in Water street, has applied to Liverpool City Council for Planning Permission and Listed Building Consent to convert the entire building to a luxury 5* hotel. Castlewood had previously obtained consent in 2011 and 2014 to convert approximately 65% of the building to an hotel. Martins Bank, which had roots in Liverpool to 1563, opened Martins Bank Building in 1932 as its headquarters and the Banking Hall closed as a branch of Barclays in 2007.

The present application proposes the creation of a 227 roomluxury hotel incorporating 35 magnificent 1 and 2 bedroom suites ranging in size from 40m2 to an 125m2 Presidential Suite in the 9th Floor Penthouse. The bank vaults that held the country’s Gold Reserve for a period during the 2nd World War will now become an authentic Roman Bath style Spa and Leisure Emporium with a full hydro-therapy experience of steam and dry Saunas, Hammam and Rasul suite, Ice Fountain and relaxing Vitality Pool. For body massage and other relaxing treatments there will be 6 treatment rooms including a couple’s suite with its own private sauna. Hair, nails and beauty is looked after in a beauty salon and fitness is taken care of in a spacious gym reserved for hotel guests and about 400 exclusive memberships.

The 13m high marble colonnaded Banking Hall will have a new mezzanine floor inserted to provide an intimate fine dining restaurant and cocktail bar for about 60 beneath the stucco moulded and gilded ceiling reminiscent of the Palace of Versailles. The 1800 m2Ground Floor will be refitted as a 200+ seat hotel restaurant, 2 bars and a large function suite capable of accommodating receptions for up to 500.

The original Martins Bank Boardroom and the 8th Floor will be refitted to a Conference & Banqueting Suite of 700m2capable of accommodating residential conference receptions for 200 and smaller wedding parties. The conference and banqueting facilities will be directly linked to 2 new SkyBars that will be created on the existing colonnaded roof 50m above the City with panoramic views over the River and the City.

The construction and refit will support up to 500 construction jobs and full time equivalent employment for nearly 300 permanent jobs will be created when the hotel, dining and leisure facilities are fully open in 2017. The initial capital investment will be in the region of £45m and the investment value on maturity is anticipated to be approximately £60m.

A spokesman for Castlewood, Bernard Byrne stated:

The hotel, leisure and fine dining facilities will represent a step change addition to the City’s tourism and conference offer as we will ensure the hotel is managedand fitted-out to the highest international 5* standards”.

2012 Apr PW win at Royal Albert Hall!!

Congratulations to Brian McAnoy of our Liverpool office, who, along with his team – which includes Bernard Byrne (our client on the Martins Hotel project in Liverpool), won the national ZUMTOBEL NIGHTGEIST lighting competition held at the Royal Albert Hall at the end of April. Brian and the team competed against 10 other teams from the UK. Their winning installation won praise from the judges for “thinking outside the box”, and highlighted the acoustic mushrooms which hang within the dome of the Royal Albert hall. Their theme was a tongue-in-cheek take on the War of The Worlds – suggesting invasion by flying saucers and was judged to be original and inventive. The team has won a trip to the Berlin Festival of Light in October later this year.

Congratulations !!!! -  to Brian McAnoy (from our Liverpool office) and Bernard Byrne (our client on the Martins Bank Hotel project). Together Brian and Bernard have won the Liverpool round of the Zumtobel BEGA Night Giest which was staged in Liverpool’s Anglican Cathedral.

Their design and execution of an installation illuminating part of the fine interior of the Cathedral beat five other entries.

They now progress to the national finals in April competing to a similar brief in The Royal Albert Hall in London!!!

Custom House Residence commended at RICS Awards

Custom House Residence designed by PW is a high density, luxury apartment development. It overlooks Custom House Square, a major public space in the city and it is surrounded by historic listed buildings. The completed scheme has been commended in the category of Regeneration at the 2010 RICS Awards. The awards were given out at a ceremony in the Great Hall, Queens University, Belfast. This award recognizes projects contributing exceptional improvements within urban, rural or coastal areas.

Povall Worthington have a significant number of clients with interests in both Ireland and UK and after securing an appointment to prepare designs and submit a  Planning Application for conversion of Martins Building to a 5* hotel the opportunity presented itself to strengthen coverage for our clients and the opportunity was taken to have a permanent presence in Liverpool. Two of the practice directors studied in Liverpool and historically, the original Povall Worthington practice was founded in Liverpool growing to a strong practice throughout the UK during the 1970's to the early 1990's.
